- Q: I have been hearing a lot about Parabens lately. It seems as though this chemical used to preserve longevity and prevent the growth of bacteria in cosmetics and food has been a hot topic lately! Patients ask me if we carry Paraben-free products, and what if parabens are present in their product?
- A:Parabens are the most commonly used preservatives in skin-care products most commonly in the form of methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. They’re really there to protect us from contamination and bacteria! In terms of skin care and beauty products, parabens are used in low levels, and shouldn’t constitute more than 25% of a products content. They are most commonly found in skin-care products, shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, soap, make-up, shaving cream, deodorant, and toothpaste. Dr. Haas supplies both paraben-containing and paraben-free products. As long as they are used for their intended purpose and in low concentrations I believe them to be completely safe.
- Q:My skin feels thin and looks translucent. It just is not as plump as it was in my twenties. What can I do to improve my texture?
- A:Over time the texture of our skin naturally changes. I am referring to the smoothness of our skin in relation to the amount of collagen near the surface. Hydration, collagen, and elastin are all important factors for smooth, soft, young-looking skin. When hormones, pollution, diet, and lifestyle come into play, they can diminish these key factors, causing dramatic changes in how your skin feels. I believe a combination of collagen-stimulating lasers and skin care products containing Retin-A, Vitamin C, and Hyaluronic Acid is wonderful. This way you are treating both the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin.
