- Q: I like to wear a sun protection product on a daily basis, but get confused on which ones to choose from. Also, some tend to break me out a little more than others. Are there certain ingredients I should look for when choosing a sun protection product?
- A: There are 2 types of sun protection products – chemical sunscreens and physical options. Chemical sunscreens contain UVB/UVA-absorbing chemicals that your skin actually soaks up. The active ingredients found in these products are avobenzone, oxybenzone or octocrylene. Physical sun blocks (also called organic or all-natural) are not absorbed into the skin, but instead remain on top of the skin and act as UVA/UVB deflectors. They generally contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. It would be a good idea to test spot an area first, before applying to the entire face and body, to see if there is any adverse reaction. Whether you pick a chemical sunscreen or physical sun block, either one is better than no protection at all.
