- Q: There are these stubborn spots on my hands that seem to have gotten darker over the summer! My hands are starting to look like my mother’s hands! My needs are to fade my sun-spots and correct damage due to sun exposure during my twenties and thirties, including equalizing my skin tones. Is there anything to make them just go away?
- A: These sun spots can be easily faded through products or chemical peels. Hydroquinone at 4%, such as Obagi®’s Clear #3 or Blender #5 is a great option to gradually lighten brown spots over time. Of course, this needs to be used in moderation and not for an extended period of time. In addition, a series of glycolic chemical peels every 3 weeks can help exfoliate the skin steadily lightening hyperpigmentation.
- Q: I hear that skin care products containing retinoids are really great for your skin! I would like to try a product containing a retinoid. Is there anything specific I should use in conjunction with them?
- A: Retinoids refers to ingredients derived from Vitamin A. They play an important role in repairing intrinsically damaged and photodamaged skin while also promoting collagen synthesis. They should definitely be uses at night prior to your nighttime moisturizer. Be very careful with sun exposure while using retinoids, as they make your skin extremely sun sensitive. Also, waxing is a “no-no” while using retinoids. I love pairing them with a Vitamin C – based anti-oxidant serum (like SkinCeuticals C&E Ferulic) and glycolic acid exfoliant (IMAAGE® AHA Marine Moisture Crème) in the morning to increase cell turnover and protection. Always finish with and SPF of 15 or higher for increased sun protection!
